This masterclass is aimed at young, motivated cellists who wish to deepen their artistry and gain valuable stage experience. On Saturday, November 21, 2026, Shapovalov vzw is organizing a masterclass at Pentagon, Ghent, led by the renowned cellist Jeroen Reuling.
The day will conclude with a concert in which several masterclass participants will also have the opportunity to perform. Afterwards, we'll wind down together with a relaxed, informal evening to chat and look back on the day.
The masterclass starts around 10:00 and runs for the whole day at a wonderful location. You'll learn not only from Jeroen Reuling, but also from watching and listening to your fellow participants — a valuable part of any masterclass. Every student is expected to be present for the full day, from start to finish. Practice rooms will be available throughout the day.
After a good break, the evening brings a student concert in which several masterclass participants perform, followed by Schubert's String Quintet performed by a guest ensemble.
Jeroen Reuling was born into a musical family in Amsterdam and studied cello with Jean Decroos, and later with André Navarra at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, where he also became his assistant. In 1981 he obtained his Konzertexamen and went on to further his studies with Pierre Fournier in Geneva.
From 1983 to 2004 he was principal cellist of the Gelders Orkest (Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra). He is professor of cello at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel since 2011.
Reuling gives masterclasses worldwide, including in Arezzo, Florence, Dublin, Budapest, Dordrecht, Oslo, South Korea, and at the University of North Carolina. He is artistic director of the International Chamber Music Festival Schiermonnikoog and has recorded for Naxos, Ottavio, and Cobra.
